Summary: In assigned groups, I will have the students create mini water cycles with the use of materials which they can choose from. While the students are observing the water cycle all will fill out a guided worksheet which will make connections between their observations and the terms they reviewed and covered last class and others will explain the water cycle in terms of their observations. The students will pick their own materials for the activity and will write a reason why they pick those materials. They will construct a procedure as to how they will put together the water cycle, will write an explanation of how the water flows through the cycle in terms of their own cycles and for homework will write way they could have improved the function of their water cycle and how they could have made a more realistic water cycle.
Objectives:
Students will assemble a materials list from the available materials to construct a water cycle with their groups and with the aid of a guided work sheet will identify the different components observed in the model they created
Students will create a procedure for constructing the water cycle model.
Students will construct the water cycle from the available and explain the water cycle in terms of their observations.
Students will explain the water cycle in terms of their observations of their model.
Students will assess their models for possible changes they could make to create a more realistic model of the water cycle.
Materials:
Crushed ice
Petri dishes
Sand
Water
Clay
Plastic mountains
Food coloring
Desk lamps
Potting soil
Petri dishes with holes in the bottom
Glass beakers
Instruction: Opening :
I will show another picture or video, this time it will be of a boiling pot of water.
( I would only show them the portion of this video in which the water was boiling)
I will ask the students to take a few minutes to explain what part of the water cycle is being observed.
I will then ask the students to take out their brainstorming homework which was assigned last class
Timing = 5 minutes
Middle:
I will assign the students into groups having the students count off by fours. Everyone who has a four will be in group four and the same rule will be applied to groups 1,2, and 3.
I will give the students a few moments to discuss amongst their group which materials they want to use and why.
Then I would instruct the student to write down their materials and on the same paper create a written procedure for creating the water cycle.
As they are creating the procedure, I will walk around the room making sure they have all the materials they will need.
If they don't have all of the materials they would need I would refer the students to their notes to see what concept they could be missing from the water cycle.
I would instruct the students to map out their water cycle before they construct it either on paper or by discussion.
I would tell the students that they have 15 minutes to construct their water cycle.
As they are constructing their water cycles I would walk around the room and provide feedback about their designs.
After the water cycles are constructed, I would tell the students to make observations for 15minutes , while keeping in mind what they know and have learned recently about the water cycle.
I would also explain to the students that while they are observing their water cycle they should write a description of the flow of water through the cycle which should include the specific processes of the cycle and be written in terms of their cycle; i.e. the water condenses and falls onto the clay mountain.
timing = 35 minutes
Closing:
I would instruct the students to place their water cycles on the window sill. I want them to be around for a couple of days so students can continue to see the water recycling.
I would tell the students to write down in their planners their homework, which will be finishing the written explanation of what was happening in the water cycle they created and what they could have done to make a more efficient model of the water cycle.
After, they had the assignment written down I would have the students discuss in their groups about the water cycle and what was happening within the one they created.
